As the Sun transitions into the grounded earth sign and initiates Virgo season this week, its traits are drawn into the light. Virgo has long been associated with ancient goddesses whose characteristics emphasize refinement, service, and spiritual dedication.

In mythology, these were referred to as “virgin goddesses,” a term that predates the association of “virgin” with sexuality. While there are differing opinions on the original meaning of the words “virgin” and “virgo,” many suggest their origins come from the Latin word meaning “maiden” and the Greek word for “unto oneself.” Virgo, then, is a dedication to oneself, a strength within self-sufficiency, and an understood wholeness. No other person or outside force can possess the goddess, for she belongs to herself.

Each of these aspects of the astrological sign exists within us at all times, expressing themselves at different volumes during different phases of life. The earth. The body. The vessel. The self-contained. The expression of purpose as service. The grounding of the divine.

When Does Virgo Season Start?

Virgo season begins August 23, 2023, and continues through September 22, 2023. Throughout Virgo season, we are invited to step into this archetype, to feel it in our bodies, to commune with its wisdom, and to observe the world and the self through its lens.

The zodiac, which contains twelve signs, is split into two halves. The first half of the circle, which spans Aries to Virgo, correlates to the development of the individual self. These signs are self-directed, aimed at both creating and learning about who we are, offering self-definition and clarity. The second half, comprising Libra to Pisces, symbolizes our relationship to other people, society at large, and the world. It concerns itself with the defined self’s interactions with all that exists beyond the self.

By the time we reach Virgo, we’ve been establishing who we are through the courageous initiation of Aries, the building of stability and endurance with Taurus, the development of the mental spheres with Gemini, learning to create safety and belonging for ourselves through Cancer’s nurturance, and exploring the human need to express our unique self with Leo.

The sixth zodiac, Virgo is a culmination of this journey of the self. After experiencing the outward and magnanimous expression of Leo season, we quiet, turn inward, and arrive at Virgo season, which is where we begin to integrate all that we have learned, become, and realized. Here we fine-tune the self. Stripping away what does not belong to us and with that, reaching the truth of who we are underneath it all.

The adaptable and mutable earth sign takes us from one season to the next, where we can refine and ultimately become a more clear, grounded, and intentional expression of who we truly are and who we choose to be in the world. The place that Virgo season occupies in the zodiac becomes a refinement, a synthesis, a bringing to order of the experiences and explorations initiated by the first five signs of the zodiac.

What Does Virgo Season Mean for You?

The role that Virgo season plays in your life is most apparent in your everyday reality. Virgo has an intimate connection with the potential of all things. Virgo is clarity of direction and highly intentional movement. It is the holding of wisdom that the journey is the destination. It is the continual integration of experiences. It is meeting the truth of who you are.

Virgo can be experienced as the refinement of self through your behaviors, especially those related to routines and habits. That awareness can be reflected back to you through analyzing, integrating, transmuting, and becoming.

You are invited to this self-refinement during Virgo season. You may be inspired to bring more ritual to cleansing your body and home, to bring order to what feels messy, and to bring surrender where you can’t make change. You are asked to take what feels big and break it down into small steps and little wins, and to concentrate on those steps, on how they compound, on how we evolve through and with them. To clear away all the noise, the extra, the outside, all that is not yours, and to explore who emerges from underneath it all.

You are compelled to bring order and purpose to all that sits around and within us and to bring all that we have been learning and experiencing and integrate it into one well-functioning whole within ourselves.

What Are Virgo Stereotypes?

As you witness yourself, consider how you would describe the manner in which you care for yourself—your body, your mind, and your emotions. How do you show up for yourself each day, support yourself, trust yourself? This is Virgo.

The intense earth sign holds the gift of seeing the highest potential in all things, including the self. With this clearsightedness, during Virgo season each step you take is intentional and in service toward the realization of perfection, whether that’s through taking care of the body or learning about the mind or plumbing layers of emotions through therapy. Each step is purposeful and continually elevates our perspective through organizing, creating detailed plans to help us move forward, or setting in place habits that hold us.

When we are in a healthy relationship with our Virgo, we trust ourselves to take our imagined dreams and divine desires and filter them into steps and actions. We honor that we are never a finished product but rather are whole as we are. We acknowledge that this wholeness will continually change as we continue to refine and integrate. When we are in a healthy relationship with our Virgo, we have a clear sense of who we are, what is for us, and what is not.

But when we are still learning to navigate this aspect of self, the Virgo preoccupation with potential can become overly critical. It is almost as if we perceive ourselves as incomplete and therefore not enough as we currently are. When our inner Virgo is still awaiting our presence and support, there can be a certain dissatisfaction with our creations or ourselves. We are pulled into the pressured perspective that because something can always be better, it isn’t worthy or worth sharing as it is.

Similarly, when seeking love, Virgo can become preoccupied with the highest possibility in a way that detracts from the goodness, beauty, and exquisite and perfectly imperfect realness that exists in the moment.

The medicine lies within Virgo. It is the refinement of self that comes from absolute respect for the self, the beauty, wholeness, and divinity that sits within us. It comes from love for the self, directing this medicine inward.

It is through continuing to create that we explore ourselves and into life. Seeing only what isn’t in alignment in ourselves and other people, sensing an incessant need to refine our bodies, our spaces, or our habits can easily control over us.

The Virgo-Pisces Connection

In astrology, each zodiac sign exists on an axis with the opposite sign in the zodiac circle. Seemingly defiant of one another yet also defined by the other. Opposite yet one. Virgo cannot exist without Pisces just as Pisces cannot exist without Virgo.

The partnership inherent between these two signs is referred to as the axis of service and is said to be where heaven and earth meet. The zodiac of Pisces is all-that-is, boundless, existing beyond time and space. Virgo, on the other hand, is the sacred vessel of the body. It is the act of tangible steps of routine and ritual. Virgo is like the Earth—self-sufficient and highly intelligent in bringing together a vast number of moving pieces in her ecosystem when treated with respect and love. Virgo is the conduit that maintains this right environment, continually stripping away that which is out of alignment.

This partnership is the vessel through which the divine, Pisces, lands in our bodies and on the Earth, Virgo. In this way, the incredible discernment that is Virgo allows for the boundless water sign of Pisces to be channeled with intention and direction. What is shown to us is that through the definition and continuous refinement of self, the way in which the divine uniquely flows through us becomes clear.

When integrated with Pisces, Virgo perceives the perfection in all and the eventual evolution in all without being disappointed in the present.

How to Work With Virgo Season

As we connect with the Virgo that lives within each of us, it is as if we are gifted a key that unlocks our unique sense of purpose and direction. Virgo invites us to explore how we can apply our innate gifts and highest potential in a useful way in the world, physically realized. Virgo asks, how can I bring this state of divinity that flows through me, the gift of refinement that I hold, and the unique self that I have intentionally crafted into the tangible world? What can I do to support my gifts, to support myself as I share them, to maximize their impact?

We see this reflected in early mythology, where the power and status of the virgin goddess was not reliant upon or owed to a partner or outside power, it came solely from her, ruling alone and offering her femininity as she chose and as an expression of divinity and sovereignty. In no way does this suggest that Virgo isn’t attuned to partnership. It does, however, show us that when this essence comes into a relationship, it can give freely without the fear of losing the self or the other, offering and receiving love from a place of completeness.
