Starting this fall, mindful breathing exercises will be integrated into the daily routines of more than a million students in New York City\u2019s public schools.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams and David Banks, the city\u2019s chancellor of education, announced the new initiative on June 27. It will require teachers to lead students at all grade levels\u2014from kindergartens to high schoolers\u2014through two to five minutes of breathwork each day. Anyone who prefers not to take a few slow breaths can opt out of the practice.<\/p>\n<h2>The Power of the Breath<\/h2>\n<p>As most casual and dedicated yoga practitioner know from experience, the simple act of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/yoga-101\/science-breathing\/#_pay-wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking a deep breath<\/a> can revamp your entire day. It\u2019s a sentiment Adams recognizes as well. \u201cBreathing calms your nervous system,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/nyc-mindful-breathing-public-schools-yoga\/13432677\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in the announcement<\/a>. \u201cIt helps to center us and help us regain our sense of balance and focus. It\u2019s a valuable, low-cost tool that has proven to improve mental health and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slow breathing exercises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/lifestyle\/balance\/stress-balance\/breathing-stress-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can reduce stress, promote relaxation, and help you focus.<\/a> These are critical benefits to the student population. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/mental-health\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2021 survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found<\/a> that 42 percent on students felt sad or hopeless and 29 percent of students had poor mental health.
